A story of love, honesty and integrity, this film about female-to-male transgender Mennonite Calvin Neufeld, captures a special moment in time between him and his family. Filmed a year after he began transitioning and a year after marrying his partner Sharon, this story shows how strong a family can be when they love, care and listen to each other.

Strands has been selected to screen at /si:n/2 in Ramallah, Palestine. The festival takes place June 6 – 12, 2011 and is the first of its kind in Palestine.

I will be applying for a travel grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, so there’s a possibility I may go!

An explanation of the festival’s name: We entitled the festival /si:n/, the mathematic sign to express the unknown, X in French and in English and a nice letter in Arabic. The spectator see it as an arabic letter but in phonetic it covers two meanings in english : scene and seen (to see). The name /si:n/ bear in itself the will of the festival to be a space of encounters between cultures.

About the festival:

The /si:n/ Festival of Video Art & Performance is the result of a partnership between a group of institutions working in the arts in Palestine, brought together by their mutual interests and desire to see this event take place, and their willingness to share the necessary tasks and responsibilities in order to realise an international event such as this. The Festival also includes performance art, bringing it into public proximity with video art and exploring the relationship between the two practices.

This partnership is comprised of a number of institutions based in Ramallah: the A.M. Qattan Foundation, Al Mahatta Gallery, the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre, the French-German Cultural Centre, Birzeit University Ethnographic & Art Museum and the Virtual Gallery. They are joined by the Palestinian Art Court – Al Hoash in Jerusalem, the French Cultural Centre in Gaza and Les Instants Vidéo Numériques et Poétiques from Marseille. This circle of partners welcomes other organizations to join and contribute to the success of the festival and thus expand the platform for cooperation in Palestine.

After the success of its first edition in 2009, the 2011 /si:n/ Festival will offer a broader repertoire: a number of programmes will be presented including a selection of works by Palestinian artists (regardless of their place of residence) and by artists from the Golan Heights. There will be curated programmes of video artworks from Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Croatia and Quebec (Canada); an international programme featuring works by prominent artists from around the world; and a programme of performance art. A series of lectures on video art and performance, talks by guest artists and a workshop will also be held.

Strands wins a Golden Palm Award at the 2011 Mexico International Film Festival!

Strands is in competition for the Prix Création Artistique CALQ at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois!

Strands has been selected for competition – category experimental for both the film and its music – at the Festival International du Film d’Aubagne, March 21 – 26, 2011.

Last year Refractions was selected for competition, and I and the composer Gabriel Dharmoo both received grants so we could attend. Unfortunately I can’t go this year, but I’m honoured to have Gabriel present my film – and his music!

The Inshadow festival runs from Dec 7 – 10, the workshop from Dec 3 – 6.
